NEED A SKATEPARK?
It’s true, if you don’t have a skatepark, you really should rally to build one. Without a safe, sanctioned space to practice their sport, young skaters forced to ride it in the street, where they face dangers like automobiles, uneven surfaces, and other hazards. If your town doesn’t have a skatepark, it is one. And for some reason it’s fallen on you (yes, you) to get everyone together and start the conversation about building a skatepark. That’s there the Tony Hawk Foundation comes in—we have the tools you need to get started, and the experience to help you along the way. Learn more (and quit wasting time—the skatepark isn’t going to build itself).
Rallying the locals to get a skatepark project going is one thing—funding the construction is often something entirely different. While your local government might have the ability to fund it outright, it’s not likely to do so. Since 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation has been awarding construction grants to help build skateparks. With 579 grants in communities in all 50 States, yours could be next! See if your project qualifies.
TONY HAWK • STARKEY • SOUTH AFRICA
Tony, Birdhouse Skateboards pros Shawn Hale and David Loy, and South African pro Thalente Biyela joined the Starkey Hearing Foundation Mission in Johannesburg last Summer to help fit a group of students with hearing aids. More than 200 young South Africans were given the gift of hearing. And the first sounds they heard? The rolling and cracking of a skate demo by Tony and the guys at the new Skateistan School skatepark in Johannesburg. Have a look (and listen) yourself.
